Blizzard Plans Achievements Across All Games

Blizzard's plan to introduce achievements in the World of Warcraft Wrath of the Lich King expansion is only the tip of the iceberg. The company plans on expanding the system to include upcoming games like Diablo III and StarCraft II, creating a Blizzard Level system tied to a single, universal Blizzard account. WoW designer Jeff Kaplan explains.

It's an interesting system from a community standpoint, but simply brilliant from a sales point-of-view. We already know the gamer score thing helps move crappy 360 games. A WoW gamer who isn't a big RTS fan might have skipped out on StarCraft II, but if it were tied into an overall Blizzard level system? Fantastic.

Blizzard Plans To Track Gamer Achievements Across ‘WoW,’ ‘Starcraft’ And ‘Diablo’

When I spoke with lead “World of Warcraft†designer Jeff Kaplan yesterday about the game’s new Achievement system, he revealed that eventually players will have a Blizzard Account that shows Achievements from other Blizzard games they’ve played, including the upcoming titles “Diablo III†and “StarCraft II.â€

“Eventually, our plans are for the Achievement system to become an account-based system,†he explained.

When the new Blizzard Accounts are active, a player’s ‘WoW’ points can be added to an overall score dubbed an account holder’s “Blizzard Level.†“It’s basically a gamerscore,†Kaplan said, when I made reference to Xbox Live’s Achievement system. “For now the points are just a ‘WoW’ character score. As we graduate to that Blizzard Account system, which is right on the horizon, it will switch over to a Blizzard Level.â€

He added, “Your ‘WoW’ score would be just one factor that will go into your Blizzard Level. And rather than call it a ’score,’ we just wanted it to be like you’re leveling up on Blizzard games… You’ll have this Blizzard identity, and you’ll be able to see things like ‘Oh, this guy was great at Diablo III, but he never played Starcraft and he was mediocre in WoW.’ That sort of thing.â€

In the interim the new Achievement system — which will launch upon the release of the “WoW†expansion “Wrath of the Lich King†— will be tied to the current “World of Warcraft†armory website in addition to the in-game Achievement interface.

The Achievements planned for the “WoW†are now character-specific, but Kaplan hopes to add account-specific “WoW†Achievements in the first content patch for “Lich King.†“Things like, ‘I have a Horde and Alliance character at maximum level’ or ‘I have three max-level characters,’†Kaplan said, citing examples. The account-level Achievements will also include ones based on different classes and professions. “For ‘WoW,’ it’ll let us do a lot of really cool Achievements, and we can start doing those once Achievements exist at the account level.â€

Testers who are currently in the “Lich King†beta have already gotten a taste of the new Blizzard Account system. Those who are invited to play in the beta are required to make a temporary Blizzard Account that’s tied to their ‘WoW’ accounts, though it will only be used for the beta and won’t function as actual Blizzard Accounts currently in use for Blizzard store purchases.

Please keep opinions like this to yourself. We realistically don't care if you feel that WoW sucks... You don't have to play it if you dont like it.

As for the actual post, Blizzard is really stealing from X-Box Live's achievements... It was bad enough when it was just WOTLK, but now its across all bliz games? Also, by unifying all bliz accounts, it is sort of becoming like Steam, where you have one account and put in all the CD keys and such...

But still, it should prove to add another amusement to the game. Achievements for WoW and D3 wont be that great... since there are already quest lines and such, but for SC it will be very good.

PC games are just following the general trend of becoming consolized.

I agree. I think this system would only really benefit SC II. All this is going to do is increase people's e-peen. I stopped playing WoW pre-BC and I can see what is going to happen already:

Random Douche: Lolz, you only have a WoW score of 1000! What a noob! You must be horrible...

Me: It is only that low because I stopped playing pre-BC...

    Random Douche: Yeah sure, noob...

Yawn. Achievements are just trophies of how much life has been wasted.

What I'm worried about is that in the above scenario, your still treated better than someone with a WoW score of 0 because they never played it.

Or that someone with a high SCII score is treated worse by other SCII players than someone with a zero SCII score because the second player has a much higher total level and the other players only look at the total level.

I'm rather looking forward to it. The idea of "The PC becoming consolized" because of this can't be applied. These are just merely in-game awards for completing shit. However, when you see titles we used to have like Call of Duty, Unreal Tournament and Battlefield pissed all over and sold for consoles first with the consolers in mind is what makes me afraid. That's why I am happy we still have developers like Blizzard and Crytek who look at the PC as the first-and-foremost platform for making their games, and they look at consoles second, if ever.
